2016 Conference

The 2016 Pacific Rim Conference on English Studies will be April 1st and 2nd, 2016. There will be roundtables, panel discussions, poster sessions, a creative writing session, a silent auction, and several extraneous events.

The theme of the conference is the influence of place on language, and how that is changing in a newly global, modern world.

  • How does a certain place influence the construction of language? How does it impact vocabulary, linguistic patterns, and pronunciation?
  • How does a writer’s location impact what and how they write?
  • What are the impacts of micro-spaces on the writing process?
  • How is language construction changing in the new global and digital landscape?

Our keynote speakers for the conference are Dr. Scott Slovic from the University of Idaho and Dr. David Bowie from the University of Alaska Anchorage. Dr. Slovic is a scholar of literature and the environment and was the founding president of ASLE, the Association for the Study of Literature and the Environment. Dr. Bowie, a sociolinguist, is conducting fascinating studies on the development of language in Alaska and how migration patterns influenced that development.
